The art of failing...

As this is my first blog regarding scooters and this business, it's only fitting to talk about the wins and fails that have come and gone in such a short time.  But first a little info:

ScooterTweaks is a repair shop in Austin specializing in Chinese vehicles including scooters, mopeds, gokarts, and atv's.  With a passion for Italian and Spanish scooters we appreciate a well designed ride!  "We have 8 of these high quality scooters in our stable".  This shop offers service and consignment sales.  Rates are a mere $45 hourly and delivery available for $35 round trip.  The shop participates in group rides, local rallies, and other riding activities.  Got a question?  Call 512-88-SCOOT!

As some of you may know I run this shop on my own.  I'm the pretty secretary, the delivery boy, the janitor, the mechanic, the accountant, and lastly a scooter enthusiast!  I have officially been in business for 3.5years and have watched many shops come and go.  Some sales, some service, some both.  Whatever the case that business failed.  How?  A question with many answers I'm sure.  What I can propose is that overhead was too high and initial costs were not realistically considered.  3 shops I can say for sure went in with fat wallets and dreams.  That doesn't create profits nor generated business.  2 others were possibly great candidates for making it!  But like so many other businesses, in general, the owners just could not be strict enough to open on time and offer the kind of service that creates needed repeat business.

I feel I have made it.  I chose to do something that no one else did, offer only service and specialize in Chinese or Asian market scooters, performance tuning, and radical modification.  A bold move perhaps in such a niche market but that's part of the win!  My shop is small, no seating, just sqft after sqft of scooters ready to be worked on.  One might be yours!  Racks of parts, chemicals, tools, custom projects, all things you might see at my shop.  But, you prob wont, without a scheduled appointment.  I pick up and deliver 95% of my work.  Your bike is in and out no customers tooling around etc.  Don't get me wrong, come by and hang out but let me know.

My overhead is low, parts and chemicals purchased at discounted bulk rates, and no cost advertising so you, my customer, can have lower rates as a choice.  I want to make a living, go on vacation, buy a nice car!  Your costs are still a concern and that is why I have chosen to not have the nicest most fancy shop in town.  No new lifts, no amazing store front property, no debt for you to pay off...

So where is my real win, you!  Thank you Austin and surrounding area for allowing a small one man business to stay afloat, wait, GROW!  I hope to share my growth with as many of you as possible.  As we speak I am in the process of locking down a new location more than double the size of the current shop.  Expect greater things!!!

Future blogs will include scooter reviews, tuning reports, rally information, fixes to common problems, write ups on current bikes getting repaired and projects as they develop!
